Mason Greenwood, the Manchester United forward, who has been suspended since January 2022, is still waiting for the club to announce their verdict on his future. The 21-year-old was arrested last year after images and video from a female acquaintance were leaked online, showing him in a compromising situation. Greenwood was cleared of the charges and was recently spotted training with his United team-mate and friend Anthony Elanga, who plays for the Sweden national team.
The forward was cleared of charges of attempted rape, coercive behaviour, and assault, but United launched an internal investigation into his conduct. The investigation is still ongoing, and there are reportedly different opinions among the club's board members on how to deal with the player. Some believe that he deserves a second chance, given his talent and being an academy player, while others fear that keeping him would damage the club's reputation and image.
One possible solution is to loan Greenwood out next season, and there are rumours that Italian clubs Atalanta and Jose Mourinho’s Roma are interested in signing him. However, the talented youngster seems to be preparing to play football next season, regardless of where he ends up. The pair posted a picture of themselves on Instagram, showing their close bond, and are currently training in Dubai after a session with Irish star James Abankwah, 19, who plays for Serie A club Udinese.
The situation is a tricky one for United, who are looking to strengthen their squad this summer under new manager Erik ten Hag. Reportedly, the Dutchman has a budget of £120 million to spend, and he would surely welcome a player of the academy graduate’s quality and potential in his team. However, he has not interfered in the investigation process, leaving it to the club's hierarchy to decide.
The Englishman has scored 35 goals and 12 assists in 129 appearances for United since making his debut in 2018 and is regarded as one of the most promising young strikers in Europe, but his career has been derailed by his off-field issues. It remains to be seen whether he will get another chance to prove himself at Old Trafford, or whether he will have to seek a new challenge elsewhere.
