On Friday, January 24, left-arm off spinner Matthew Kuhnemann received clearance to join the Australian squad for their upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka in Galle later this month. The decision from the Australian management came after he made rapid recovery following a surgery to his right thumb fracture last Friday, which was injured during a game for Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League (BBL) a day prior.
According to the report published in ESPNcricinfo yesterday, Matthew Kuhnemann bowled eight overs at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane as a part of proving his fitness, to ensure that his name stayed in the Australian squad for the Test tour to Sri Lanka. Furthermore, during the training session, he also batted as the bowling coach of Brisbane Heat and Queensland, Andy Bichel, delivered a few throw downs to him, while he did some catching practice under the supervision of BBL team physio Adam Smith.

Now that Matthew Kuhnemann has finally secured his spot for the two Test matches against Sri Lanka, he will be making the trip this weekend alongside young Victorian batter Oliver Peake, who is the development player selected for the tour. Just a day ago, before it was confirmed that the 28-year-old will be travelling to Sri Lanka, he spoke to the media in an interview in Brisbane, talking about how his surgically repaired right thumb is almost pain-free.
Matthew Kunhnemann is the part of the three-prong spin attack of Australia, which also includes the veteran Nathan Lyon and Todd Murphy, on pitches at the Galle International Cricket Stadium generally favourable to spin. Steve Smith is captaining the Australian cricket team on the Test tour, in the absence of permanent captain Pat Cummins, who has taken a leave of absence to deal with his ankle injury and await the birth of his second child.
