BBL (Big Bash League) saw its significant free-agency move in the 2024-25 season, with Melbourne Renegades signing leading wicket-taker Jason Behrendorff. The left-arm seamer signed a three-year deal as Perth Scorchers could not guarantee signing him. Behrendorff has four BBL titles to his name with the Scorchers throughout his 13-year, 106-game career. He had an outstanding 2024-25 BBL season, making it to the team of the year for the first time as the competition's best wicket-taker, having taken 17 wickets at 17.41 and an economy rate of 7.55.
"Moving to Melbourne is something my wife, Juvelle, and I have talked about as a goal whether the end of my career happened so to continue my career and play cricket in a city, we both love is a blessing. I am really excited for what the next chapter holds with the Melbourne Renegades but just as importantly for my family too,” said Behrendorff in a statement.
Significant boost for Melbourne Renegades with Jason Behrendorff claims James Rosengarten
By signing the contract with Renegades, Jason Behrendorff will be joining forces with BKT Golden Arm runner-up Tom Rogers, who was successful with 16 scalps in this season. Moreover, Renegades General Manager James Rosengarten was quite happy with Jason’s decision to join the team.
"Jason is a world-class bowler and proven match-winner, so we’re delighted to have him on board," said Rosengarten. "His performances in BBL|14 and over a long period shows why he’s one of the most dangerous bowlers in the competition,” he added.
Jason earned a good reputation in white ball, appearing in 29 international games representing Australia in T20 matches. Behrendorff joins the Renegades in the inaugural BBL Player Movement Window, which opened on Tuesday, January 28 and lets clubs sign qualifying free agents while trading uncontracted players or draft picks. Behrendorff's contract with Renegades might lead to him playing for the Cricket Victoria-owned Major League Cricket franchise San Francisco Unicorns.
