Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo have been in the headlines from the beginning of the 2022-23 season and continued to stay at the top of the debates for all the wrong reasons as many pundits and media companies have criticised the five-time Ballon d'Or winner on multiple occasions, which has not gone well with his ex-teammate Mesut Ozil.
Recently, Ronaldo's former Real Madrid teammate Mesut Ozil has lashed out at the critics of "one of the greatest athletes in sports history" and accused the media and pundits of "getting attention" by making Cristiano look bad.
On Friday, Mesut Ozil took to his official Instagram handle and posted a picture of his Real Madrid days with Cristiano Ronaldo and wrote, "I really don't get where this constant negativity from the press about Cristiano comes from... The Media is just trying to get clicks, and pundits who don't have a career anymore just want to get attention with his big name and try to make him look bad."
Ozil went on to throw lights on Ronaldo's unbreakable achievements and added, "He is soon 38 years old - so what's the surprise that he doesn't score 50 goals a season anymore? Every football fan out there should be happy to have seen him playing world class football for 20 years - I don't think anyone from the new generation will be able to match his numbers again. He will forever be in his own category. 🐐"
In the end, the 2014 World Cup winner demanded respect for the Portuguese and wrote, "Everyone should show more respect to one of the greatest athletes in sports history..."
Portugal are scheduled to face Morocco in the FIFA World Cup 2022 quarterfinals on Saturday at the Al Thumama Stadium as the winner between them will qualify for the semifinals to face the winner from England and France's fixture.
