On Sunday, April 20, Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated arch-rivals, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by nine wickets in match number 38 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After CSK dismissed Ryan Rickelton early in the innings, Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav played a pivotal role, handing MI their third consecutive win in the ongoing season to help them move to sixth spot in the points table.
For the unversed, after winning the toss, Hardik Pandya, the captain of Mumbai Indians (MI), decided to bowl first. The decision proved important for the hosts as they handed CSK their first blow as a combined effort by Ashwani Kumar and Ryan Rickelton helped them dismiss Rachin Ravindra. The new batsman in Ayush Mhatre, did look good, hitting bowlers for two sixes and four fours during his stay, his inning was cut short by Deepak Chahar, which left CSK reeling at 57/2 in 6.5 overs.
In the next over, Santner and Rickelton once again provided a crucial breakthrough as Shaik Rasheed departed having scored 19 off 20. Ravindra Jadeja, who walked at number four, did look good and stitched a 100-run stand with Shivam Dube as the duo posted fifty-plus scores respectively. This partnership in the middle-order also helped CSK put a competitive total of 176/5 in their 20 overs.
MI register first win over CSK after four consecutive defeats in IPL
In the run chase, Ryan Rickelton was joined by Rohit Sharma, who walked out as an impact player for the Mumbai Indians. However, Rickelton’s innings was cut short by Ravindra Jadeja, with debutant Ayush Mhatre completing a catch, Rohit was joined by Suryakumar Yadav, both of whom added 113 runs to help the side finish on the other side of the line with nine wickets remaining.
With this win, MI registered their first win in five attempts and also the second win for MI against CSK in the last eight IPL games. After a comfortable win, MI jumped up to take the sixth spot in the IPL 2025 points table, whereas CSK cotinue to reel at the bottom spot.
