Former England skipper Michael Vaughan labelled India as the most underachieving team following their Boxing Day Test defeat against South Africa. He said that the Indian team doesn’t win anything and failed to justify the talent and resources at their disposal by failing major tournaments for several years. After ending the T20I series with 1-1 tie, and the ODI series with a 3-2 win, the Indian team lost the Boxing Day Test against South Africa on December 28, Thursday. The visitors, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, lost the game by an innings and 32 runs in Centurion.

The Indian team lost the World Test Championship 2023 by Australia, followed by a defeat against them in the ODI World Cup 2023 Final. Vaughan, who was present in the commentary panel of the Australia-Pakistan Test match made remarks on India. The former cricketer said, "Here's a question for you - India, in terms of cricket, are they one of the most under-achieving sports team in the world?"

Vaughan added, "With all the talent that they have... I think they are, yeah. Well, they don't win anything. When was the last time they won something? With all the talent they have, all the skillsets... they won here (Australia) twice, magnificent but the last few World Cups, been nowhere, T20 World Cups, nowhere. You go so South Africa, who are, you know, useful in Test match cricket and to produce a performance like that... I mean, with all the talent they have, and the resources they have, I don't think they win anything.”

After a humiliating loss on South African soil in the first Test, both sides will go head-to-head in the second Test match starting on January 3. Following the completion of the series, India will host England in a five-match home series, which is starting on January 25.
