India’s Mirabai Chanu stunned Olympic gold medallist and champion Hou Zhihua on Wednesday to clinch silver at the Weightlifting World Championships. Chanu lifted a combined weight of 200kg to settle for a silver in the Women’s 49kg event at the Championships.

 

The Indian weightlifter won a silver in clean and jerk while she finished fifth in the snatch category. He finished second behind champion Jiang Huihua of China, who registered a total of 260 kg. This is her second medal at the World Championships, having previously won gold in 2017 with a total of 194kg (85kg & 109kg).

 

Talking about the Chanu’s performance, she started on a slow note, lifting 85kg in snatch. Although she failed her second attempt (87kg), before excelling her third attempt with a lift of 87kg). She was seen struggling again in her second attempt of clean and jerk, but successfully recovered to finish with a total of 113kg.

 

The CWG gold medallist returned to her first international tournament after the Birmingham Games. The star weightlifter withdrew from the National Games after suffering from a wrist injury.
