English football legend Wayne Rooney has agreed on terms with his former Major League Soccer club DC United and is set to return as the head coach. Rooney played in MLS at the Audi Field for two seasons before returning to England.

The 36-year-old former English international played for DC United in 2018 and 2019. Rooney will replace interim coach Chad Ashton.

The Athletic writer Pablo Maurer took to his official Twitter account to inform about Rooney's recent association with the MLS. He wrote, "DC United and Wayne Rooney have agreed on terms, multiple sources tell me tonight. Rooney, who starred for the club as a player, will be their newest manager."

After completing two seasons in MLS, the former Manchester United star returned to England to play for EFL championship side Derby County in 2019-20. The EFL club was relegated to League One, the third tier of the championship system, in April 2022.

Currently, DC United are sitting in the second-to-last place with 17 points in the Easter Conference of MLS after missing the playoffs for two consecutive seasons.
