On May 17, the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) reported that MS Dhoni and Bhuvam Bam are two of the top celebrities who have violated their rules in recent times. According to the governing body of advertising in India, there have been many complaints filed against these celebrities and they have failed to submit evidence of due diligence on their part.

MS Dhoni, the captain of Chennai Super Kings is on first spot in terms of breaking the ASCI rules, with a whopping ten complaints of non-compliance. He is closely followed by the YouTuber turned actor Bhuvan Bam in second place with seven complaints of non-compliance.

“In spite of the Consumer Protection Act now legally requiring celebrities to do their due diligence when they appear in ads, in 97% of cases processed by ASCI featuring celebrities, they failed to provide any evidence of due-diligence,” stated the ASCI report.

The advertising body further mentioned that they have seen an increase in celebrity complaints in comparison to last year. They reported, “ASCI witnessed a massive rise in the number of complaints featuring celebrities in the year 2022- 23. 503 ads featuring celebrities were processed as opposed to 55 ads the previous year.”

Meanwhile, ASCI, established in 1985, is known as the self-regulatory body of the advertising industry in India. They reportedly resolve issues with d ishonest or misleading ads, indecent or offensive ads, harmful ads, and ads that are unfair in competition in the country.
