Marylebone Cricket Club, t he London-based prestigious club, known for framing the rules of the game of cricket, awards top-class cricketers from around the globe with their esteemed membership. On Wednesday (April 5), MCC awarded MS Dhoni and four other Indian cricketers with the prestigious life membership. The MCC has announced 19 new Honorary Life Members in its latest addition, which included former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, former Indian Women skipper Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami and Suresh Raina.
Dhoni, the most successful Indian captain, has led the country to victory in the 2007 ICC T20 and the 2011 ICC World Cup. While Yuvraj was a part of both the teams, Raina scored more than 5,500 ODI runs in his career. Jhulan Goswami, the leading wicket-taker in women’s ODI played her last match at the Lord’s against England. Mithali Raj, however, sits on the top of the most run scorers' list with 7,805 runs in an overall of 211 innings.
Apart from India, there are five players from England who have been bestowed upon with MCC life membership. Some players from countries like Australia, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and West Indies have also joined the elite list.
In an official release by the MCC, the Chief Executive and Secretary of MCC, Guy Lavender said, "We are thrilled to be able to announce our newest cohort of Honorary Life Members of MCC, as we prepare for the new international summer. The names that have been announced today are some of the greatest international players of modern times, and we are privileged to now count them as valued Members of our Club.”
While Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami were last seen at the recently concluded WPL 2023, MS Dhoni is currently leading his yellow squad in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League.
