Former Indian captain MS Dhoni is known for his calm nature on the field even during intense situations. Due to calm approach and behaviour, Dhoni was also given the title of the ‘Captain Cool’ by the fans and is being called by this name for years. Now, Dhoni has filed trademark application for the term ‘Captain Cool’ which has been associated with him for a long time.

According to the Trade Mark registry portal, MS Dhoni filed an application for the trademark of the term Captain Cool in the official trademark journal on June 16, 2025, and the application has now been accepted. Dhoni’s lawyer Mansi Aggarwal confirmed the news of trademark application.

“Delighted to share a recent development from the field of trademark law that underscores the evolving role of personality rights and acquired distinctiveness in overcoming relative grounds for refusal,” Mansi Aggarwal was quoted as saying by India Today.

MS Dhoni, who was recently inducted into thee ICC Hall of Fame has decided to trademark the popular term Captain Cool to strengthen his personal image. The former Indian skipper can also use this term for commercial avenues, including merchandise, endorsements, different media projects and many more if the trademark is approved. Dhoni’s lawyer Mansi Aggarwal also revealed that it wasn’t an easy task to file trademark as there were several hurdles.

As reported in India Today, Registry also raised an objection under Section 11(1) of the Trade Marks Act as it could confuse people. However, Dhoni’s legal team clarified the term is clearly associated with him and became a part of his publicity among fans.

“The phrase ‘Captain Cool’ has acquired a distinct secondary meaning through a long-standing and widespread association with Mr Dhoni, the former captain of the Indian national cricket team,” Dhoni’s lawyer said.
