India suffered a heart-breaking defeat against South Africa in the rain-hit first ODI match in Lucknow. The Proteas had a brilliant batting display thanks to half-centuries by David Miller and Henrich Klassen who took the total to 249. Analysis:

The Indian team could not replicate the form from the T20Is as the new batting order continued their struggles. The only positive from the batting depart other than Samson was Shreyas Iyer who also scored a 50. Shardul Thakur also chipped in with the bat scoring a quick 33. Talking about the bowling, India had another poor performance in the death as they conceded 53 off the final 5 overs. Another big blow will be the injury to Deepak Chahar who will be missing the series.

The Proteas built on their winning momentum from the final T20I and dominated India in Lucknow. The South African batters were struggling but stuck to their plan and played aggressive shots. Similarly, in the bowling department they played to their strengths but still need to make some improvements in the death as they allowed Samson to get India back in the game.
