Neeraj Chopra’s long-time coach, Klaus Bartonietz, has announced his decision to step down from his coaching role to spend more time with his family. During his illustrious tenure, Neeraj Chopra won two Olympic medals, two World Championship medals, and an Asian Games gold. Their successful journey together at the international level came to an end after Neeraj Chopra earned the silver medal in the Diamond League Finals in Brussels last month.
The 75-year-old German coach, Klaus Bartonietz ,joined the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) in February 2019 as a biomechanical expert. After the departure of previous coach Uwe Hohn, he became the new coach of Neeraj Chopra five years ago. His support was crucial during Chopra's recovery from injuries and throughout his training over time, helping him become arguably the greatest sportsperson from India.
Neeraj never talks nonsense and never makes a big noise: Klaus Bartonietz
Klaus has always supported Neeraj during training and competitions. He helped with both the technique of javelin throwing and the mental strength needed to compete. Bartonietz praised Chopra to the media, saying, “ He is a very hard worker. Also, you have to be mentally strong, otherwise you are not going to win at big events. He is not overconfident but realistic. He never talks nonsense and never makes a big noise. Like a Formula One race driver who understands the power, engine speed, and everything about the car, Neeraj understands the event and his body.”
AFI chief coach Radhakrishnan Nair confirmed that Bartonietz would leave in mid-October. “He wants to be with his family,” Nair said. “Though we hoped he would stay involved, especially with young athletes, the decision rests with him.”
Now with this change, Chopra will look for a new coach to help him prepare for upcoming competitions, including the 2025 World Championships. Adille Sumariwalla, president of the AFI, mentioned, “After spending five years with Klaus, Neeraj might benefit from having someone new. We are talking to several people to find a coach he will be comfortable with.”
Bartonietz has had a huge impact on Indian athletics. He helped Neeraj Chopra achieve great success, including a gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and a silver at the World Championships. Neeraj said, “I have learned so much from Klaus, and I appreciate everything he has done for me.”
