After a quarter-final exit in the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, the Netherlands will look to improve their performance in the upcoming UEFA Euro 2024. The Dutch side are placed in Group D alongside France, Poland, and Austria. However, ahead of their Euro 2024 campaign, the Netherlands suffered a major injury blow as their star midfielder has been ruled out of the European championship.
The Netherlands will kick-off their Euro 2024 campaign against Poland on June 16 in Hamburg and ahead of the tournament, Ronald Koeman's side dealt a major blow as the 27-year-old F renkie de Jong failed to recover from his ankle injury. In his 5 World Cup appearances for the Netherlands, the former Ajax midfielder scored a goal and made one assist.
Barcelona star midfielder Frenkie de Jong missed the final month of the season after suffering a gruesome ankle injury in his side's 3-2 El Clasico loss against Real Madrid on April 21. Despite his injury, De Jong was named in the Oranje squad for the Euro 2024.
According to Voetbal International, Netherlands boss Koeman was prepared to face Poland in their opening game of the Euro 2024 without the services of De Jong to keep him fit for the rest of the tournament.
Frenkie de Jong was a key player in the Netherlands' last two major international tournaments. In the Euro 2020, De Jong started all four games as the Dutch side were eliminated in Round of 16 against Czech Republic while he played almost 90 minutes in every game during the Netherlands' quarter-final run at the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
