On Wednesday, February 5, Newcastle United reached the EFL Cup final after smashing Arsenal 4-0 on aggregate across both legs of the semi-final. During the second leg of the EFL Cup semi-final, Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon found their names on the scoresheet as Newcastle United defeated Arsenal 2-0 at the St. James’ Park on Tyneside, to book a place in the final against either Liverpool or Tottenham at the Wembley Stadium in London.
After getting the better of Arsenal with a 2-0 scoreline at the Emirates Stadium in London last month, Newcastle United needed a controlled performance at home, to get a step closer to winning a domestic trophy since 1955. Eddie Howe’s men didn’t have much of the ball in front of their home fans at the St. James’ Park, but they didn’t allow Arsenal to have many clear cut opportunities at goal.

Jacob Murphy opened the scoring for Newcastle United in the 19th minute, to put Arsenal under intense pressure to make a comeback from three goals down in the EFL Cup semi-final. The visitors tried hard to get a goal back, but the defense of Newcastle United held firm before one of their attempts at a high press yielded a soft goal as Anthony Gordon put the ball in the back of the net, to put his team 4-0 ahead on aggregate.
After securing a berth for Newcastle United in the EFL Cup final, Eddie Howe was quoted as saying, as per NDTV Sports, “It is huge. The first appearance there was a bit unexpected, but we want to be there regularly, so it's not a surprise this time. We are there on merit. Our run has not been easy this year, so we've done the hard yards. Hopefully we can learn from the last experience. We have come a long way since then. I would love to think we can go to Wembley and perform better.”
Newcastle United were beaten by Manchester United 0-2 in the EFL Cup 2022-23 final at the Wembley Stadium in London.
