The long-awaited sale of the Washington Commanders from Daniel Snyder to Josh Harris is expected to be finalized today, July 20 after the NFL and Snyder reached a settlement to resolve legal issues that threatened to complicate the sale’s closing. Those issues were related to the email leaks in October 2021 that led to the resignation of Jon Gruden as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.

Snyder, who has owned the Commanders since 1999, agreed to sell the team to Harris, a billionaire co-founder of Apollo Global Management, for a record-setting $6.05 billion in June 2023. The deal was approved by the NFL finance committee on Monday and is set to be ratified by the other owners during their meeting scheduled today in Minneapolis.

Harris, who also owns the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Devils, met with the NFL last month to discuss the league’s concerns about financing the sale, which involves a large amount of debt. However, Harris eased the league’s concerns and found a solution to move forward.

The sale marks the end of Snyder’s controversial tenure as the owner of the Commanders, which was marred by scandals, lawsuits, and poor performance on the field. Snyder faced allegations of sexual harassment, workplace misconduct, and defamation from former employees and minority shareholders.

According to one of the sources with knowledge of the deliberations, the findings of the NFL’s investigation into Snyder and the Commanders could be released soon. The Commanders fans can feel a little bit better about the sale finally going through as they hope for a new era of success and stability under Harris’s ownership.
