Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios is set for an epic return at the French Open - the second Grand Slam of the season - for the first-time in eight years. The 30-year-old is looking to “have a bit of fun” at Roland Garros this year, with his plan being to team up with fellow Australian Jordan Thompson in the men’s doubles event after not being a part of the tournament since 2017.

Notably, in the ongoing 2025 tennis season, Nick Kyrgios has played only four singles matches thus far after struggling with a lot of injuries in relation to wrist, knee, and foot for quite some time. The initial plan of the Australian was not to be a part of the French Open this year, as per the report published in BBC Sport, but the opportunity arose when Jordan Thompson’s regular doubles partner Max Purcell got banned in connection with doping for 18 months - backdated to December last year - in April.

The French Open was never really on the cards: Nick Kyrgios

While speaking to Canberra Times, Nick Kyrgios remarked about how his French Open comeback came to be, “The French Open was never really on the cards. But after the stuff with Max Purcell, Jordan was looking for a partner and he asked me if I wanted to play. We've played at the French Open before, so it'll be good to get out there and play with another fellow Aussie and have a bit of fun.”

Moreover, it was at the French Open in Paris in 2017 when Nick Kyrgios partnered up with Jordan Thompson, defeating the second seed pairing of Pieree-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut in the first round before losing in the third round. As far as his current comeback is concerned, the Australian is looking to build momentum to Wimbledon, where he plans to play in the singles event.
