Things have definitely not been good for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) since the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic hit the nation. From shifting of remainder of IPL 2021 to the risk of losing the hosting rights of T20 World Cup, the apex cricket body of India has certainly faced a lot in the past few months.
As things stand now, BCCI is almost nearing the permitted extension from ICC to decide on the fate of the T20 World Cup slated to be held in India in the month of October and November. However, before that there is another big problem that has caused headache to the national cricket body.
BCCI to pay 906 crore to ICC in case of no tax exemption from govt
Notably, the BCCI had to get an assurance of tax exemption from the Indian government for the ICC ahead of the mega event. The deadline for the procedure was supposed to be June 15, however, there is still "no update" on the issue. Amidst all, BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal has assured that talk for the same is under process and the deadline would not be an issue.
“There is no update on the tax issue. The talks with the government are still ongoing and we can only say something at a later stage. The last day won’t be a problem,” said Arun Dhumal as quoted by InsideSport.co.
It is interesting to note that in case, BCCI fails to make the government come to terms with its needs, the former has to pay 906 crores to ICC. Meanwhile, if reports are to be believed the BCCI is also trying to get a partial waiver from the Indian government. In such a case, it will have to pay ICC a reduced amount of 227 crore.
T20 World Cup likely to be shifted out of India
Given India is already struggling in fight against COVID-19 and a third wave is also on the cards, the BCCI is likely to shift the mega event to UAE, where IPL 2021 is also taking place. A update on the hosting of the world event is likely to be given on June 28, the deadline permitted to BCCI to decide the fate of the marquee event.
