Former World No. 1, Novak Djokovic has pulled out of the upcoming Italian Open amidst three-match losing streak from the ATP Masters events. The 24-time Grand Slam champion’s decision came as a shock, further shedding doubt on his participation in the upcoming Grand Slam, the French Open 2025.
The 37-year-old, who is coming from a defeat against Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi in the opening round of the Madrid Open, continues to wrestle with poor performances. While his Madrid Open exit was a shocking one, it marked his third straight after exits at Miami Open, and the Monte Carlos Masters.
Novak Djokovic withdraws from Italian Open 2025
With the clay court event in Rome scheduled to be held from May 6 to 18, the Internazionali BNL d'Italia took to social media to confirm the Serbian’s withdrawal. "Novak Djokovic has announced he won't take part to #IBI25...See you next year, Nole," Internazionali BNL d'Italia wrote on X.
It is to be noted that Djokovic’s struggles have been under intense scrutiny. Furthermore, the 37-year-old sparked speculation on his future in the sport. Speaking to the reporters after his recent defeat, Djokovic said, “Obviously, after you lose a match you don't feel good, but I've had a few of these this year where I lose in the first round, unfortunately. I think the positive thing is that I really enjoyed myself more than I have in the Monte-Carlo or some other tournament, so that's a good thing. But obviously, still level of tennis is not where I would like it to be. But it is what it is. I lost to a better player.”
