India and Pakistan were set to lock horns for the second time in the ODI World Cup history that too in the quarter final of 1996 Cricket World Cup at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on March 9. In that game, India defeated arch-rival Pakistan in the World Cup clash again to register their second consecutive win against the neighbours in the history of the 50-over event. 

Talking about the match, India defeated Pakistan by 39 runs to qualify for the semi-final of the 1996 World Cup. Batting first, India posted 287 runs for the loss of 8 wickets with Navjot Singh Sidhu top scoring with 93 runs. In reply, Pakistan were restricted at 248 runs losing 9 wickets in 49 overs with Anil Kumble and Ventatesh Prasad sharing three wickets each.

Coming to bat first after winning the toss, India got a good start as Navjot Singh Sidhu and Sachin Tendulkar put up a partnership of 90 runs in 21.2 overs. Sachin got out after scoring 31(59) runs while went on to score 93 runs off 115 balls hitting 11 boundaries. Apart from that, Ajay Jadeja also scored a quickfire 45(25) runs smashing four fours and two sixes as India crossed the 280-run mark. For Pakistan, Waqar Younis and Mushtaq Ahmed scalped two wickets while Aaqib Javed, Aamer Sohail and Ata-ur-Rehman scalped a wicket each.

Chasing the winning target, Pakistan also got a flying start as skipper Aamer Sohail and Saeed Anwar added 84 runs for the first wicket in 10.1 overs. Anwar got out after scoring 48(32) runs hitting five fours and two sixes while Sohail played a captain’s knock of 55(46) runs with nine fours and a six. Apart from that, none of the other batters could play a big knock as Pakistan fell short of 39 runs from India’s total as per the DLS method
