The rivalry between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians got even more exciting with MS Dhoni finishing it off with a boundary when a four was needed on the last ball during the IPL 2022 fixture at DY Patil Stadium on April 21. Both the teams were in a tough position in that season and needed to win this game. However, CSK held their nerves till the end and registered a thrilling win over MI.
Talking about the match, coming to bat first after losing the toss, MI got to a disastrous start as they lost both their openers in the first over. After that, Suryakumar Yadav scored 32 runs of 21 balls. After that, Tilak Varma scored a fighting fifty as MI crossed the 150-run mark. The young batters remained unbeaten on 51*(43) runs, hitting three fours and two sixes, while Jaydev Unadkat gave finishing touches with 19*(9) runs as MI posted 155 for the loss of seven wickets. For CSK, Mukesh Choudhary took three wickets, Dwayne Bravo took two while Maheesh Theekshana and Mitchell Santner scalped a wicket each.
MI gave early scare to CSK before MS Dhoni’s masterclass
Chasing the winning target, CSK were left in a tricky situation as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Ruturaj Gaikwad lost his wicket on the first ball of the innings followed by Mitchell Santner’s dismissal as CSK were reduced to 16/2 after 2.3 overs. Robin Uthappa contributed with 30(25) runs while Ambati Rayudu turned out to be a top scorer with 40(35) runs.
CSK lost five wickets for 102 runs in 14.5 overs before MS Dhoni came in to bat. The match went down to the last over with CSK needing 17 runs from six balls. In the first ball of the over, Jaydev Unadkat dismissed Dwaine Pretorius for 22(14) runs. On the next delivery, Dwayne Bravo took a single, bringing Dhoni back on strike.
Now, with 16 runs needed of the last four balls, MS Dhoni smashed a six and a four followed by a double as CSK now needed four off the last ball to win. After that, Dhoni smashed a boundary on the leg side as CSK registered a thrilling win over arch-rivals MI on the last ball of the match. Dhoni remained unbeaten 28(13) runs with three fours and a six.
