Mohammad Amir, the former Pakistan pacer, has remarked that he is going to be eligible to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the year 2026, while speaking on a Pakistani TV show “Haarna Mana Hai”. It is understood that the wife of Mohammad Amir, who goes by the name Narjis, is a citizen of the United Kingdom (UK), and now, the cricketer is looking to get a UK passport, which might give him a chance to play in the IPL down the road.

Notably, Mohammad Amir retired from international cricket in December last year after playing his final match for Pakistan during the T20 World Cup 2024, which ended on a disappointing note. The left-arm fast bowler had made his return to international cricket in the summer of 2024 after his first retirement, which was taken way back in 2020, although the 32-year-old didn’t rise to his own expectation during his second coming.

By next year, I will have the opportunity to play in the IPL: Mohammad Amir

While speaking to the host Tabish Hashmi of the Pakistani TV show “Haarna Mana Hai”, Mohammad Amir was quoted as saying, as per Indian Express, “Next year tak meri opportunity ban rahi agar hua to kyu nahi (By next year, I will have the opportunity to play in the IPL and if given the chance then why not). I will play in the IPL.” The Pakistan cricketers got the chance to play in the IPL in its inaugural season in 2008, but since then, the strained political relationship between India and Pakistan has led to them never being a part of it again.

In another question from the show, the host asked Mohammad Amir, “What will be his reactions when he will be criticise in Pakistan for playing in the IPL?” In response, the former Pakistan cricket said, “Pakistani cricketers were banned in the IPL, but our former cricketers were doing commentary and were also coach of the franchise,” talking about Ramiz Raja and Wasim Akram, two of the greats from the country.

It will be very interesting to see the next trajectory of the volatile career of Mohammad Amir, whether he will be a part of the IPL next year or nothing will materialise to that effect.
