On Tuesday, August 6, Germany will be taking on India in the Paris Olympics 2024 men’s hockey semi-final at the Stade Yves-du-Manoir. This highly anticipated clash in the men’s hockey event will be a repeat of the bronze medal match from Tokyo Olympics 2020, where India defeated Germany in a thriller with the 5-4 scoreline.

Germany vs India: Preview

Germany and India reached the semi-final stage at the Paris 2024 after getting the better of Argentina and Great Britain respectively in the quarter-final stage. These two countries have a historic rivalry in men’s hockey, dating back to the 1930s when India defeated Germany 8-1 in the final to win their third successive Olympic gold medal during the Berlin games.

There have been 106 matches played between the multi-time Olympic champions in international men’s hockey, which includes 26 wins for India, 53 wins for Germany, while 27 ending in a draw. In the last eight matches between these two nations, India have gotten the better of the opposition seven times, while Germany emerged victorious in the previous one.

Germany vs India: Prediction

Germany welcomed their captain Mats Grambusch into their playing XI during the quarter-final against Argentina after an injury setback, but in a high-octane battle, he received two cards for his troubles. During the Paris Olympics 2024, Germany have been a free scoring team with Christopher Ruhr getting four goals, while Gonzalo Peillat and Niklas Wellan notching up three goals each.

For India, their defence has proven to be the biggest strength in the Paris 2024 men’s hockey event, while their captain Harmanpreet Singh is the joint top-scorer with seven goals. Amit Rohidas is suspended by the FIH for the upcoming semi-final after he received a red card for dangerous play in the quarter-final against Great Britain, which India won in a penalty shootout after playing for more than 40 minutes with just 10-men.

Considering all these facts, India could win the semi-final clash against Germany in the penalty shootout.
