Star English batter Joe Root achieved a new milestone in his Test career during England’s eight-wicket win in the first Test against New Zealand at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. The right-hander remained unbeaten on 23*(15) runs hitting three fours and a maximum, while chasing a target of 104 runs on day four. During this short innings, Root became the highest-ever run scorer in the fourth innings in Test cricket. The 33-year-old now has 1630 runs while batting in the fourth innings in Tests, while Sachin Tendulkar scored 1625 in the fourth innings during his illustrious career. 

Joe Root has already became the highest run-scorer in Test cricket for England with 12777 runs in the longest format so far. He is now 3144 runs behind Sachin Tendulkar, and there is a chance for him to become the all-time highest run scorer in Test cricket if his Test career runs on the current trajectory for a few more years. 

Brydon Carse take six-wicket haul as England take 1-0 lead in three-match Test series

Talking about the match, after trailing by 151 runs in the first innings, New Zealand were bowled out for 254 runs in the second innings, giving England a target of 104 runs to win. Daryl Mitchell was top scorer for New Zealand with 84(167) runs, hitting 12 fours and a maximum. For England, Brydon Carse shone with figures of 6/42, while Chris Woakes scalped three wickets and Gus Atkinson put one in his bag. 

Chasing the winning target, England got an early setback as they lost Zak Crawley at the score of one run in 1.5 overs. After that, Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell added 54 runs for the second wicket, Duckett got out after 27(18) runs. Bethell remained unbeaten on 50*(37) in his debut game for England along with Joe Root as England chased the target in just 12.4 overs after losing two wickets. The visitors have now taken a lead of 1-0 in a three-match Test series.
