On Monday, February 10, South Africa’s Matthew Breetzke scripted history as he became the first player in the history of one-day internationals (ODIs) to score 150 runs on debut. Making his debut in South Africa’s tri-nation series match against New Zealand at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Breetzke scored 150 runs off 148 deliveries with his innings being laced with 11 boundaries and five maximums.
Opening for Proteas Men alongside captain Temba Bavuma, Breetzke reached the three-figure mark off 128 deliveries with a boundary. After scoring a ton, the 26-year-old became fourth South African batter to score a century on ODI debut, joining the elite list consisting of Colin Ingram, Temba Bavuma and Reeza Hendricks.

The 26-year-old batter then went on to score 150 in just 20 deliveries to break West Indies’ Desmond Haynes’ 47-year-old record, which saw him hit 148 against Australia in 1978. Speaking of his innings in detail, Breetzke stitched 93-run stand with Jamie Smith after South Africa lost skipper Temba Bavuma. Breetzke then added 131 runs for the fourth wicket with Wiaan Mulder after South Africa lost two wickets.
Speaking of the 26-year-old, Breetzke made his Test debut for South Africa in October 2024 against Bangladesh in Mirpur. However, he got out for a duck in the only innings he played then. Then he went onto make his T20I debut in September 2023 against Australia in Durban and has so far scored 151 runs in 10 matches.
