Pretoria Capitals have appointed former England international Jonathan Trott as their new Head Coach for Betway SA20 Season 3. Trott succeeds Graham Ford, who was in charge of the Capitals for the first two Betway SA20 seasons. Ford led the Capitals to the runners-up position in Season 1. The 43-year-old is the current Afghanistan national team coach with whom he has gained major success. Trott recently oversaw Afghanistan’s best-ever performance at a Men’s ICC T20 World Cup where they advanced to the semi-final for the first time in their history.
Trott will be returning to his country of birth South Africa. He attended the prestigious Rondebosch Boys’ High School in Cape Town and represented South Africa at youth level - both U15 and U19 - and embarked on a professional career with Western Province and Boland before opting to pursue his future in England with Warwickshire County Cricket Club in Birmingham.
It ultimately led to a hugely successful international playing career with England, which included 52 Tests, 68 ODIs and 7 T2OIs. Trott averaged 44.08 in Tests, 51.25 in ODIs and 23 in T20Is.
Highly regarded as a compact top-order batter, Trott played a pivotal role in England retaining the Ashes in Australia in 2010-11 - the first time they had won a Test series there in nearly a quarter of a century - with centuries at No 3 in Adelaide and Melbourne.
He will be hoping for similar success with the Capitals in South Africa’s premier domestic T20 competition.
