A few days back, a video involving a former state-level hockey player went on viral on social media. Paramjeet Kumar, who was once a part of Sports Authority of India, PEPSU and Punjab teams and won medals in four junior hockey nationals and was also named in the Indian junior hockey team in 2007 was seen lifting sacks to make a living. Paramjeet revealed that he earns INR 1.25 for loading and unloading each sack.
The former hockey player also revealed why he left the sport. Paramjeet said in an interaction that he sustained an injury in 2012 which kept him out of action for almost a year. However, he made a comeback but with things not falling in place, Paramajeet finally gave up on the sport. But the 30-year-old was optimistic about his chances in the industry as he had hoped for a positive result from his meeting with Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann. And as it seems Paramjeet’s belief has finally paid off.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has assured that Paramjeet will be given a coach’s job in the sports department of the state. “Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann says former hockey player Paramjeet, who currently works as labourer, will be given job by his govt as coach in sports department,” tweeted News Agency PTI.
Coming to Paramjeet, the 30-year-old is a resident of Faridkot. He currently lives in the rented accommodation of her sister along with his wife and son. The former hockey player had also revealed his wish to give his son a better life who is also slightly inclined towards playing hockey.
“Not many people know about my association with hockey, but when they get to know they pat me on my back. That’s the only reward I have got from Hockey. When I return home, I see my five-year-old son Vikrant and I make him play with plastic hockey and a ball. Whatever happened to me, I want him to change that,” Kumar had told Indian Express.
