Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have decided to sack their Director of Cricket Operations Mike Hesson and head coach Sanjay Bangar from the job, as per the reports on July 16, Sunday. The franchise looks forward to rebuilding their coaching staff as part of their preparation for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season.
In the 15-year history of the prestigious T20 franchise league, RCB are yet to win the coveted title, after making the finals three times in 2009, 2011, and 2016. But during the five-year coaching tenure of Mike Hesson, they only made the IPL playoffs three times.
According to the report from the Indian Express, Royal Challengers Bangalore are searching for fresh coaches, while it isn’t clear if the batting coach Sridharan Sriram and the bowling coach Adam Griffith from the 2023 season are going to continue in the job or not. It was also mentioned that Hesson and Bangar have a great camaraderie with Virat Kohli, who has been an institution at RCB for the last 15 years, but still, the owners are keen to bring new ideas to the table, to help bring the championship home to the M.A. Chinnaswamy Stadium for the first-time in history.
The potential reason for the sacking of Mike Hesson and Sanjay Bangar could be the way Royal Challengers Bangalore played in the IPL 2023, leading to their elimination before the playoffs. They were largely struggling with their middle order batting, which has been the perennial problem for the franchise in the last few years. The bowling department for RCB didn’t set the world alight either.
As of right now, it isn’t known whether Royal Challengers Bangalore is going to hire an Indian or overseas head coach for the 2024 league season.
