Antonio Mateu Lahoz, the former Spanish referee who officiated in La Liga and several international tournaments, has landed a new job following his retirement from the pitch. He will be joining Movistar+ as a referee commentator alongside Carlos Martínez and Álvaro Benito for their Champions League coverage.
Mateu Lahoz refereed several editions of the FIFA World Cup, the UEFA European Championship, and the UEFA Champions League. His last major assignment was the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he was involved in a heated quarterfinal between Argentina and the Netherlands, which ended with more than a dozen yellow cards and a red card for Denzel Dumfries. He was reportedly sent home after that match by FIFA.
Now, Mateu Lahoz will have a chance to share his insights and opinions on refereeing from a different perspective, as he will be part of the Movistar+ team that will broadcast the Champions League matches in Spain. According to Relevo, fans and critics may have been understanding because of his ability to talk, which made him the focus of numerous reports.
His conversations with the players during the meetings ranged from passionate to humorous, but they were always marked by a casual and especially close tone. Mateu Lahoz will begin this new endeavor in his life after turning down excellent offers from other significant media, like Cope, as well as one to lead the arbitration group in Arabia.
