Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski’s goalscoring streak was finally broken after he failed to score against Greuther Furth. The Polish striker found a place in the starting lineup and was hoping to score in his 16th Bundesliga game but unfortunately couldn’t hit the back of the net. Nevertheless, Bayern Munich registered a comprehensive 3-1 win.
Lewandowski was eyeing to continue the record streak in the league but he had to settle with 15 games in the end. With his goalscoring streak broken, he has found himself a place in the list of the 11 longest goalscoring streaks in league football history once again.
Before this, Lewandowski had a record goalscoring streak of 12 Bundesliga games which he registered during the 2012/13 campaign. His current streak started on February 15, 2021, against Arminia Bielefeld and he then went on to score against Eintracht Frankfurt, FC Koln, Dortmund, Werder Bremen, Stuttgart, Mainz, Gladbach, Freiburg, Augsburg, Gladbach, FC Koln, Hertha Berlin, RB Leipzig and Bochum.
Who else features in the list?
Apart from Lewandowski, there are ten other players who find themselves on this unique list. The Argentine striker and captain Lionel Messi sits at at the top of the list with a scoring streak in 21 games. Messi achieved this feat in the 2012/13 campaign while playing for Barcelona in the La Liga. He started his streak in mid-November and scored 33 times in 21 games. Interestingly, the second player on the list is five games behind Messi.
Gerd Muller scored in 16 consecutive games for Bayern during the 1969/70 season. Behind him is Teodor Peterek (16), Robert Lewandowski (15), Josef Martinez (15), Tor Henning Hamre (15), Stan Mortensen (15), Serge Masnaghetti (13), Robert Lewandowski (12), Jimmy Dunne (12), Gabriel Batistuta (11), and Jamie Vardy (11). Apart from Lewandowski, Gerd Muller is the only player who holds the record in Bundesliga.
