Roger Federer, the Swiss tennis legend, is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. He has won a record 20 Grand Slam titles, the last of which came at the 2018 Australian Open. Now, his fans have a chance to own a piece of history, as his match-worn outfit from that tournament is up for sale in an online auction.

The outfit, a personalised creation from Nike, is as unique as the champion himself. It features custom labelling and two certificates of authenticity from the Roger Federer Foundation. The lot includes the autographed shirt and shorts that Federer wore during his historic run in Melbourne, where he defeated Marin Cilic in a thrilling five-set final. The shorts as well as the shirt are signed by the legend himself, which has added to the cost of the set.

The auction is organized by Prestige Memorabilia, the global leader in tennis memorabilia, and will run from September 20 to October 8, 2023. The bidding will start at $25,000, but the outfit is expected to achieve up to $35,000(approximately 29 lakh INR), according to the auctioneer. The outfit is one of the most valuable pieces of tennis memorabilia ever offered and a rare opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts to own an authenticated piece of sporting history.

The outfit is not the only sports memorabilia that has fetched a high price at auction. In fact, some items have sold for millions of dollars, such as the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card, which sold for $12.6 million in August 2022, making it the most expensive sports memorabilia ever sold.

Another example is Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” jersey, which he wore during the 1986 World Cup quarter-final match against England, where he scored one of the most controversial goals in soccer history. The jersey was sold for $8.9 million in May 2022, making it the most expensive football memorabilia ever sold.
