Swiss Tennis great Roger Federer announced his schedule for the clay season this year. He disclosed that he will participate in only two events this year - the ATP 250 event in Geneva followed by the French Open. Although the 39-year-old was on the list of participants at Madrid Open, he has now decided to skip that Masters 1000 event. In addition, Federer will not take part in the Rome Masters which immediately follows the Madrid Open. This is because he intends to use that period to prepare for the French Open in his home country.
Participants will get enough time to rest before Roland Garros
Usually the Geneva Open takes place just before the French Open. However, the postponement of the Roland Garros this year implies there is a week-long window between the two events, giving the Geneva participants including Federer enough time for rest and recovery before the clay court Grand Slam.
Returned to competitive tennis last month
The 20-time Grand Slam champion returned to competitive tennis last month in Doha after a gap of 13 months. However, he failed to make much of an impact at the ATP 250 event. After beating Dan Evans in the second round, he was knocked out of the event by eventual winner Nikoloz Basilashvili in the quarterfinals.
