Roger Federer recently made waves on social media after appearing on stage at a Coldplay concert in his home country Switzerland. The tennis legend was seen on stage performing with the iconic British band. Federer later said that the moment was not spontaneous as it first appeared but rather was pre-planned. In fact, his daughter was the one that encouraged him to go on stage despite his reservations about the whole ordeal.
Federer said that he had met Chris Martin, who is Coldplay’s frontman and lead vocalist, and reached out to the musician once he learned that they were set to play in Zurich. However, when Martin invited Federer on stage with the band to perform, he had major reservations. Unsure about the whole situation, he asked his elder daughter and she told him that he should make the most of every opportunity and should absolutely go on stage.
Federer said, “I met the band when I saw them in Montreal. I don’t know what year it was — maybe 2016? We’ve been in touch a bit. I’ve seen Chris Martin in the Hamptons several times. So when they came to Zurich, I reached out and said, ‘I’m so excited, I would love to come’. Chris wrote me back and asked if I wanted to come onstage. I asked my daughter at dinner, and she looked at me and said: ‘You have to do this. You only live once’. So I told Chris: ‘I’m in! I didn’t even know what I had signed up for.”
In the video that went viral on social media, Chris Martin is seen introducing Roger Federer as their fifth band member. Federer then walked on stage and performed with the band, playing percussion.
Federer’s musical career cont inues
This wasn’t the first time the iconic player had been invited on stage at a musical event. In the past, Federer has performed with music royalty like Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi and Billy Joel on stage at a concert at Hyde Park during the British Summer Time Festival. Just like with Coldplay, Federer played percussion during a performance of the song Don’t Panic.
Aside from this, Federer has also gone on stage at the Met Gala. He also juggles tennis with all of his live appearances and brand endorsements, along with humanitarian work in Africa which he is deeply passionate about and shares often on his social media.
