The Indo-Australian pairing of Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden has won the Miami Open Masters 1000 title, defeating the Croatian Ivan Dodig and Austrian Austin Krajicek in a thrilling contest that lasted one hour and 42 minutes. With that, Rohan Bopanna, aged 44 years old, became the oldest man to win a Masters 1000 title on the ATP circuit.
In the first set, Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden lost out in the tie-breaker 6-7 (7-3) before winning the second set 6-3 to force a deciding 10-point tie-breaker. Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek pushed them to the limit in the closing stages, but the Indo-Australian pairing was too strong in winning the tie-breaker 10-6, to take the match and the Miami Open title.
The championship match saw Bopanna and Ebden win 78 percent of the points on the first serve, but their second serve was put under immense pressure by Dodig and Krajicek. But despite that, the pair managed to save seven out of nine break points on their second serve, to secure the big win.
In the year 2024, Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden reached three finals on the ATP tour, winning two of those. During January, the Indo-Australian pairing won the Australian Open title in Melbourne, scripting history with Bopanna becoming the oldest world no. 1 in men’s doubles.
With his victory in the Miami Open, Rohan Bopanna is set to regain the top spot on the men’s doubles rankings after losing it briefly in the lead-up to the aforementioned tournament.
