After being put to bat first, Punjab Kings posted a big total of 221/6 with the help of KL Rahul's 91 and Deepak Hooda's quickfire 50. RR while chasing, lost early wickets but Samson's outstanding knock kept the Punjab bowlers at bay. However, despite a herculean effort from Samson in his captaincy debut, RR ended up losing the game by a margin of just 4 runs.
