The inaugural edition of the SA20 tournament started exactly a year ago today (10th January) in Cape Town which saw MI Cape Town beating Paarl Royals convincingly by 8 wickets. Young sensation Dewald Brevis won the Player of the Match award by scoring an unbeaten 70 runs in 41 balls. MI Cape Town, despite starting the tournament with a victory, went on to lose 7 matches in total and ended at the bottom of the points table.

The inaugural SA20 season also saw the same six franchises participating in the tournament where Pretoria Capitals dominated the group stage with 7 wins in 10 games. But it was Sunrisers Eastern Cape, who lifted the trophy by winning the final against the table toppers Pretoria Capitals.
Joburg Super Kings ended up winning six games and finished second position but lost the semi-final match against the champion side Sunrisers Eastern Cape team.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape Town started their SA20 tournament by losing the first two matches to the table toppers Pretoria Capitals, but later they won three games in a row and despite facing some setbacks they qualified for the semi-finals of this tournament due to their NRR.
