India’s tennis star Sania Mirza reached the semifinals of the Mixed Doubles event at the ongoing Wimbledon 2022. Mirza paired up with Croatia’s Mate Pavic to beat the fourth-seeded Canadian-Australian pair of Gabriela Dabrowski and John Peers to seal their place in the mixed doubles semi-finals.

Playing on Court 3, the sixth-seeded Indo-Croat pair eked out a thrilling 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 win over the Canadian-Australian duo in one hour 41 minutes on Monday night. The Mirza-Pavic duo will take on Robert Farah and Jelena Ostapenko in the semifinal clash.

Sania Mirza and Pavic had beaten Spain's David Vega Hernandez and Georgia's Natela Dzalamidze 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (3) in the first round. They then got a walkover from their second-round opponents Ivan Dodig and Latisha Chan and advanced to the quarterfinals.

Notably, this is Sania Mirza’s best-ever mixed doubles performance at the All England Championship. Mirza, a six-time Grand Slam winner, had previously reached the quarterfinals in 2011, 2013, and 2015 in the mixed doubles event. A Wimbledon title is the only mixed doubles Grand Slam missing from her trophy cabinet.

We will miss you: Wimbledon on Sania’s retirement news

The 35-year-old recently announced that she will call it a day at the end of this season as her body is wearing down. “I do feel my recovery is taking longer, I'm putting my 3-year-old son at risk by travelling so much with him, that's something I have to take into account. I think my body is wearing down. My knee was really hurting today and I'm not saying that's the reason we lost but I do think that it is taking time to recover as I'm getting older,” Sania Mirza had said at the Australian Open.

Now, with the Indian ace all set to bid adieu to the game, Wimbledon expressed their gratitude towards Sania by resharing her message “It has been an honour to represent India in Wimbledon” and writing “It has been an honour having you here, Sania Mirza. We will miss you," alongside.
