The Indian doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty reclaimed the World No. 1 position after their dominating Thailand Open Super 500 badminton tournament. The Asian Games gold medallist pair beat China’s Chen Bo Yand and Liu Yi in straight sets by 21-15, 21-15 margin.

The India duo clinched their second Thailand Open title in just 46 minutes after claiming it for the first time in 2019. Entering the tournament as World No. 3 ranked pair, the Indian men’s doubles pair finished the tournament on high and reclaimed the top spot in the BWF Rankings. 

While this was their second title of the year, following their French Open triumph in March, it was their ninth BWF World Tour title. Moreover, the Sat-Chi pair was the first Indian duo to claim the World No. 1 ranking in October 2023, they reclaimed it on Tuesday, May 21 following their win. 

“Thailand Open has been a special tournament for us as we won out first Super 500 crown here and have won many more tournaments thereafter. We are hoping that this victory will start another winning run for us,” Satwiksairaj said as quoted by BAI after the pair’s win. 

Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa go up to World No. 19

Moreover, the Indian pair of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa, who reached the semifinals of the Thailand Open recently, have also jumped two places to take the World No. 19 spot. In other important change, Meiraba Luwang Masnam, who reached the quarterfinals by defeating the World No. 9 HS Prannoy and World No. 54 Mads Christensen, has climbed 13 places to take the World No. 71.
