Shubman Gill Glamorgan

Team India top-order batter Shubman Gill is set to sign with the County Championship side Glamorgan for the remainder of the 2022 season. But Gill’s stint in England is subject to visa clearance. If all falls in place, Gill will be the seventh Indian player to play for the county team this season, after Cheteshwar Pujara (Sussex), Washington Sundar (Lancashire), Krunal Pandya, Mohammed Siraj (both Warwickshire), Umesh Yadav (Middlesex) and Navdeep Saini (Kent).

Gill will be the third Indian to play for Glamorgan in the County Championship after former player and coach Ravi Shastri, who played for four years between 1987 and 1991 and Sourav Ganguly in 2005. The Firozpur-born batter has been in great form over the ODI series against West Indies and Zimbabwe, where he put up 205 runs at 102.50 average and 245 runs at 122.50 average respectively.

The Gujarat Tians batter won the Player of the Series award in the recently concluded Zimbabwe tour and garnered praise from the India captain KL Rahul as he said, “He's been batting well since the IPL. Very pleasing to the eye. Not seen him over-confident. That requires composure, to show that kind of temperament is good.”

Gill has played in 11 Test matches where he has scored 579 runs at an average of 30.47. His last five-day fixture was the rescheduled fifth Test against England in Birmingham in July this year where he managed to score 17 and 4 while the Indian team lost the match.

He has also played in 12 First Class matches for his home team Punjab in the Ranji Trophy, where he has put up 1176 runs at an average of 65.33. Glamorgan is currently third in the Division Two table with five wins in 10 matches. They still have four more games left and will resume the season against Worcestershire on 5 September in Cardiff.

For the Wales-based team, none of the three overseas players they have played in the Championship will be available in September. While Colin Ingram will  be playing in the Caribbean Premier League, Marnus Labuschagne and Michael Neser will be back in Australia. The club previously announced that New Zealand left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel will be playing in the final month of the season for them.
