Sir Alex Ferguson will reportedly step back from his ambassadorial role at Manchester United by the end of the season. As per reports, the decision has been taken as part of the cost-cutting drive at the club. It came after Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s purchase of a minority stake in February. Notably, United finalised the redundancies of 250 members from the staff in order to save around $58.8 million.
Ferguson became the club ambassador in 2013 after he retired from the role of the manager after spending 25 years at the helm. At the ambassador’s role, Sir Ferguson earns more than $2.6m, as per a report by ESPN. The same report suggests that his agreement has ended as a part of “cost-saving measures across the board.” It quoted a club source saying that Ferguson "will always be welcome at Old Trafford".
Sir Ferguson should be able to do anything he wants: Eric Cantona
The rumours of Manchester United bringing an end to Sir Alex Ferguson’s contract at the club didn’t sit well with Eric Cantona. The former player who played a leading role in Manchester United’s first four Premier League titles under Ferguson, called it scandalous news. The former footballer who played for United between 1992 and 1997, took to Instagram to call out the reports.
He wrote, “Sir Alex Ferguson should be able to do anything he wants at the club until the day he dies. Such a lack of respect. It's totally scandalous. Sir Alex Ferguson will be my boss forever! And I throw them all in a big bag of s---!" Notably, Ferguson won 13 English league titles during his tenure as manager between 1986 and 2013.
