New Zealand is hosting Bangladesh in a three-match ODI series. While the hosts registered a convincing win in the opening ODI by 44 runs by DLS method, they have however, sealed the three-match ODI series having won the second on Wednesday, 20 December by seven wickets.
While the match went New Zealand’s way, Bangladesh opener Soumya Sarkar hogged the limelight for his 169-run knock. During his stay in the middle, Sarkar went onto broke legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s 14-year-old record in Nelson, early today. His knock, which included 22 boundaries and two maximums, he surpassed Sachin’s record for highest runs in ODIs by a player from the sub-continent in New Zealand.
In 2009, the ‘God of Cricket’ , Sachin Tendulkar etched this record with an unbeaten 163 runs against New Zealand in Christchurch. Talking about Soumya Sarkar, the 30-year-old also smashed the highest individual score by a Bangladesh batter against the Kiwis.
Talking about the match, Tom Latham-led side won the toss and invited the Bangla Tigers to bat first. On the back of a 169-run knock from Soumya Sarkar, the side posted 291/10 in 49.5 overs. However, the total was comfortably chased by the hosts with crucial runs from the bat of Will Young (89), Rachin Ravindra (45) and Henry Nicholls (95), winning the match by seven wickets and taking a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
The two sides will next take on in the third ODI and final ODI on December 23 at the McLean Park, Napier.
