The Swiss cyclist Gino Mader died at the age of 26 after suffering a crash at stage five in the Tour de Suisse on June 16, Friday. The team Bahrain Victorious cyclist got involved in a high-speed crash with American rider Magnus Sheffield, 21, on June 15, Thursday. Mader went off-road and fell into a ravine on the final descent into La Punt in south-eastern Switzerland. The cyclist was found unconscious in water and was then airlifted to Chur hospital but passed away Friday morning.
The team, Bahrain Victorious, announced the death of Mader in an official statement. The statement read, “It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we have to announce the passing of Gino Mäder. On Friday 16 June, following a very serious crash during stage five of the Tour de Suisse, Gino lost his battle to recover from the severe injuries he sustained. Our entire team is devastated by this tragic accident, and our thoughts and prayers are with Gino’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
The statement further read, “Despite the best efforts of the phenomenal staff at Chur hospital, Gino couldn’t make it through this, his final and biggest challenge, and at 11:30am we said goodbye to one of the shining lights of our team. Gino was an extraordinary athlete, an example of determination, a valued member of our team and the whole cycling community. His talent, dedication, and passion for the sport has inspired us all.”
Team Victorious’ Managing Director Milan Erzen said, "Not only was he an extremely talented cyclist but a great person off the bike.” On the other hand, Ineos Grenadiers rider Magnus Sheffield suffered a soft tissue damage and was taken to a local hospital. Notably, Mader was a track cyclist before he took up cycling professionally in 2019. He joined team Bahrain Victorious in 2021 and won stage six of the Giro d'Italia.
