Preview

South Africa and Bangladesh will lock horns in the 22nd match of the T20 World Cup 2022 on Thursday (27 October). Both teams have played a game each so far in the tournament. While Bangladesh beat the Netherlands in a close-fought game, South Africa earned one point after their match against Zimbabwe ended in no result due to rain. Now, the Temba Bavuma-led team need to beat Bangladesh if they are to stay alive in the competition. Meanwhile, the Tigers will also look for a win to consolidate their position in the group.

Pitch Report

The pitch at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) is considered a good batting wicket. An example of this was seen during the match between Australia and New Zealand. The track does not offer the bounce of Gabba or the raw pace of Perth, but it aids spinners enough which can trouble the batters to some extent.

Team Analysis

South Africa

South Africa could not play a full game against Zimbabwe as rain played a spoilsport. Nevertheless, in the limited time they got, the Proteas put on a promising performance. Wayne Parnell and Lungi Ngidi showed some promise with the ball. Meanwhile, Quinton de Kock stole the show with the bat. The wicketkeeper batter played a quickfire inning of 47* off just 18 balls while Temba Bavuma watched from the other end. However, de Kock’s efforts went in vain as the rain stopped the play and it was eventually called off. Nevertheless, South Africa would like to put on a similar performance against Bangladesh and register their first win.

Bangladesh

Bangladesh put on a decent performance against the Netherlands to register a win by nine runs. But it was not as clinical as they would have liked. There were a few errors made too. With the bat, many Bangladeshi batters struggled as the team lost wickets at regular intervals. Najmul Shanto got a start but could not convert it while Litton Das, Soumya Sarkar, and Shakib Al Hasan departed cheaply. Meanwhile, Afif Hossain and Mosaddek Hossain played good innings to propel the team to a fightable total. With the ball, Taskin Ahmed stole the show as the pacer bagged four wickets. Ahmed also contained the flow of runs. Mustafizur Rahman was also good at stopping the flow of runs. Captain Hasan will hope for a similar performance against South Africa as well.

Conclusion

South Africa looked in control in the limited time they spent on the field during their game against Zimbabwe. The bowlers were successful in containing runs while batters scored runs at brisk rate. Meanwhile, Bangladesh struggled a bit in the middle. Hence, South Africa will be the favourites going into the match on Thursday.
