Colombian singer and music composer Shakira blamed former footballer and ex-boyfriend Gerard Pique for no new songs since 2017. The ‘Waka-Waka’ singer appeared on the famous ‘The Tonight Show’ hosted by Jimmy Fallon on NBC, where she discussed why it took her so long to make a new album in such a long time. Shakira shared her thoughts when Fallon asked her why the new music had been released for over seven years.
Notably, Shakira and the Spanish footballer dated for 11 years before calling it off in June 2022 after learning that the footballer cheated on her. The 37-year-old footballer is currently dating model Clara Chia Marti, and they currently live in the home he used to share with Shakira.
It was the husband, he was dragging me down: Shakira
Shakira blamed Pique and said that it was because of him she couldn’t work in the past years. She said, “I was putting out songs here and there but it was really hard for me to put together a body of work. It was the husband. Now I'm husbandless. Yeah, the husband was dragging me down. Now I'm free. Now I can actually work.” Talking about her album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, the singer said, “Women no longer cry. It’s men’s turn now.”
Revealing her inspiration behind composing the 16 tracks of the album, the ‘Whenever, Wherever’ singer said, “I was raw. I was dealing with a lot of stuff. I felt at times with a knife between my teeth. I was picking up the pieces of myself from the floor. I was trying to rebuild myself. Music was the glue.”
