Former world number one Naomi Osaka has decided to pull out of the upcoming Wimbledon because of a left Achilles injury. The four-time Grand Slam winner revealed this news on Saturday on her social media. The Japanese star hasn’t played in the All England Open since 2019.

“My Achilles still isn't right so I'll see you next time," the three-time Grand Slam winner wrote on Twitter. Osaka had also pulled out of last year’s Wimbledon because of mental health issues.

Osaka had also pointed out another major reason for not playing in Wimbledon as the tournament has removed the ability to earn points which would affect the rankings. This decision of the authorities had reduced her motivation to play.

The ATP and WTA had decided to take away ranking points from the Championships as the organisers of the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) decided to bar the participation of Russian and Belarusian players following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Citing similar reasons, former Wimbledon finalist Genie Bouchard from Canada has decided to not play in the grass-court grand slam. She made a statement on Twitter that addressed how she wants to save her protected ranking (PR) entries as she is suffering from a shoulder injury in a tournament where no ranking points are awarded.

Genie Bouchard’s statement said, “Hi guys, quick update on my end. have decided to withdraw from Wimbledon due to the WTA's decision to not award ranking points at this year's Championships.”

"I am continuing my training/rehab and plan on returning to competition later this summer. I will now use my two Grand Slam PR entries for the US Open and the Australian Open. Thank you for all the amazing messages of support. I love you guys and can't wait to see everyone again soon", she added.
