German football player Timo Werner has confirmed his departure from Stamford Bridge as he readies himself to reunite with RB Leipzig. The 26-year-old posted an emotional message for Chelsea fans as he announced his departure. Notably, Werner joined the Blues in 2020 and appeared for them in 89 games. However, he did not have the best of times in terms of the goals he scored.
Werner scored only 23 goals in 89 appearances for Chelsea which is significantly lesser compared to his performance in Bundesliga where he netted 95 goals in 159 appearances at Leipzig. Nonetheless, the striker has bagged a €30m (£25m/$31m) contract with the Bundesliga club and hopes to earn a place in Hansi Flick's Germany squad for the 2022 World Cup.
“Dear Blues, Today marks the end of my journey with Chelsea FC. I am incredibly grateful for the time I spent at this special club. At this point I would like to express my appreciation for my teammates, the conches & staff, and especially for you, the special supporters of Chelsea Football Club. I felt so much love and support throughout the last two years and I will never forget how you guys stood behind me in good and in challenging times!” wrote Timo in his note.
“We lifted trophies like the Champions League together and I will always remember the song you wrote and chanted for me. I'm already looking forward to hopefully playing at Stanford Bridge again one day!” he added.
The 26-year-old had admitted last month that he is seeking a way out of Stamford Bridge as he could be happier away from Chelsea. "It is hard to say (if clear-the-air talks are needed). First of all, the most important thing is that I am happy. I am happy when I play and score goals," Werner had admitted.
