India n women's doubles duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand got knocked out of the Singapore Open 2024 after their disappointing semifinal defeat on June 1, Saturday. The Indians went down to their Japanese counterparts Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida in the Super 750 women’s doubles by a score line of 21-23, 11-21. Gayatri and Treesa put on a fantastic fight in a 47-minute-long battle; however, their effort fell short as their much higher-ranked rivals took them down.

The world ranked 30 duo fought back from a slow start and pushed the Japanese all the way to some extra points. However, in the second game, the world ranked four duo gained a huge lead in the first half and went on to seal the deal. Treesa and Gayatri had registered a win against world ranked 2 duo of Baek Ha Na and Lee So Hee in the round of 16. Later in the quarterfinals, they mounted a brilliant win over world no. 6 Kim So Yeong and Kong Hee Yong with a score line of 18-21, 21-19, 24-22.

Coming back to their semifinal, the loss marked the end of Indian campaign at the tournament. Apart from Treesa-Gayatri, PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy lost their respective women’s and men’s singles matches on Thursday. Not only this, but the star duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also slumped to Denmark rivals 22-20, 21-18 in the round of 32.

After their QF win earlier, Gayatri told BWF, “It was a great win. They are tough players, they don’t give anything easy. I am super happy. Hope this continues and we win the tournament.” Treesa, on the other hand, added, “How many ever rallies were there, we didn’t give up. After so long we have played good matches against seeded players, it’s awesome.” Notably, the Indians were the only unseeded pair in the final four of the tournament in women’s doubles.
