After registering back-to-back wins, PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, crashed against 20-year-old World No. 4 An SeYoung in their final clash of the ongoing Uber Cup 2022 in Bangkok on Wednesday. In the second clash, the women's double pair of Shruti Mishra and Simran Singh was outplayed by Lee-So-hee and Shin Seung-chan 13-21,12-21 in a 39-minute match.
India's disappointing day didn't end there, but the duo of Tanisha Crasto and Treesa Jolly lost to Kim Hye-Jeong and Kong Hee-Yong, 14-21, 11-21, followed by Ashmita Chaliha getting knocked out by Sim Yu-jin. However, Indian women had already booked their berth in the quarter-finals after beating Canada and the USA, but they missed out on the top spot in Group D after an ordinary show against Korea, who finished the group stage with three wins.
Young Ashmita Chaliha was impressive on the day as she put Yujin Sim in a tight situation in a 39-minute long final women's singles match of the tie. Chaliha fought hard but went down to the Korean in straight games - 21-18, 21-17. After two successive wins against Canada and USA, it was a reality check for the Indian camp as they could not win a single game against Korea during the five-match tie.
Later in the day, the Indian men's team will face Taiwan for the top spot in Group C of the Thomas Cup in Bangkok. India has announced a strong playing team with Lakshya Sen returning to the mix to join hands with Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy.
Lakshya Sen led the men's side against Chinese Taipei, which promised to be another challenging encounter. Although Sen displayed superb game and could have sealed the affair in straight games as well, with not-so-ideal playing conditions and sheer nerves, he lost in 1 hour 20 mins, 21-19, 13-21, 21-17.
