The wait is finally over as the last draw of the new UEFA Champions League (UCL) format in the 2024-25 season has finally been revealed with the round of 16 fixtures. After eight exciting group-stage match days and two legs of the round of 16 playoff ties in the UCL, the fans have the fixtures for the next round to feast their eyes on.
First up is the spiciest of all fixtures; Real Madrid versus Atletico Madrid. The Madrid derby will be rekindled in the Champions League as these two heavyweights will lock horns in the RO16. Both of the last two outings between these two sides in the Spanish League have ended in dismal 1-1 draws. And with Real Madrid coming off an important win against Manchester City in the playoff tie this will be a cracking fixture.
Another solid fixture at the fans disposal will surely be Liverpool against PSG. The French side looks revitalized under Luis Enrique and will go against Arne Slot’s Liverpool who are in blistering form as they topped the group stage table of the UCL and also sit atop the PL table.
More familiar foes face-off each other
Bayern Munich will be all set to take on their German compatriot Bayern Leverkusen. The last meeting between the two was in the Bundesliga where Xabi Alonso’s side dominated Bayern Munich, not allowing them to take a single shot on target in the 90 minutes. Vincent Kompany will have a big challenge to take on as his side will prepare for this knockout tie.
FC Barcelona will also relive some of their group-stage memories as they face Portuguese side Benfica in the round of 16. The group-stage encounter between these two teams was one to remember where Barcelona scraped away with a narrow win away from home. The game was full of drama and ended 5-4 with Barcelona captain Raphinha scoring a heroic last minute winner.
