
Ukraine, which has been under Russian invasion since February 24, is set to join Spain and Portugal in their bid to host the FIFA World Cup 2030. The move is reportedly sanctioned by Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelensky that would allow the country to host one of the groups in the tournament.
The domestic league of Ukraine started successfully in August and is currently taking place behind the closed doors while the national team are playing their home matches in Poland.
Two years ago, Spain and Portugal validated to make a joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup while the addition of Ukraine is expected to be confirmed at a news conference on Wednesday afternoon.
The FIFA World Cup 2022 is scheduled to take place in Qatar from November 20 to December 18 while the 2026 edition will be hosted jointly by the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
Earlier, Ukraine co-hosted UEFA Euro 2012 with Poland and indicated their capability to host large-scale events. On the other side, the collaboration between Egypt, Greece and Saudi Arabia could offer a competition to the European sides to host the 2030 edition while the South American countries including Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Chile are also among the contenders.
